INVEST COLLEGIATE: Transform BOARD INFORMATION
Hello INVEST COLLEGIATE: Transform families, stakeholders and members of the community. The board is responsible for governing INVEST COLLEGIATE: Transform in Charlotte to ensure they meet their missions and promises to the community they serve. The volunteer board meets monthly and sometimes more often via conference call.

Board Members

Dr. Hoover, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, received his B.A. degree in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965 and his M.D. degree from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina in 1969. Following two years of residency in general surgery at Duke, he was assigned to active duty in the United States Navy at the Naval Hospital on Guam in the Mariana Islands from 1971-73. He completed his general surgery at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center in 1975 and his Cardiothoracic Fellowship at the same institution in 1978. He spent two years as an assistant professor of surgery at Cornell before moving to Brooklyn, New York, as an associate professor of surgery at the State University of New York – Downstate and chief of surgical services at the Brooklyn Veteran’s Administration Medical Center from July 1980 – August 1987. In 1987 he was named the fourth Professor and chairman of the department of surgery at Meharry College in Nashville, Tennessee. He served as professor and chairman of the department of surgery and Executive Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1990-2001. He also served as chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery at SUNY/Buffalo from 1991 to 1994 and 2000-2002. Dr. Hoover has trained over 100 general surgeons and half dozen cardiothoracic surgeons who are currently practicing throughout the world.
Dr. Hoover was a member of 40 professional associations including Alpha Omega Alpha, the Society of University Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the American Surgical Association. He was on the editorial boards of three journals and has published over 180 manuscripts, including co-authoring the landmark AMA apology to the NMA in the July 16, 2008 issue of JAMA. He has served as a visiting professor throughout the world and has been an associate examiner for the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He has served on several National Institutes of Health study sections and is past president of the Surgical Section of the National Medical Association and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. From July of 2004 until July of 2013 he was named the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the National Medical Association, the nation’s leading medical journal on minority health. Dr. Hoover retired in 2013 but continues to mentor students from high school and college students, residents in training and junior faculty. He also works very closely with the department of surgery at the four campuses of the University of the West Indies strengthening their training programs and improving surgical care across the Caribbean. Dr. Hoover received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Duke University School of Medicine in 2013 and currently serves on the Medical Alumni Council.

Yolanda Malachi is originally from St. Helena Island, SC and now lives in Charlotte, NC. She holds Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Winthrop University, Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education and an Education Specialist certificate from the University of Phoenix. Yolanda has over 10 years’ experience in Early Childhood Education in addition to being an Early Childhood Lead Teacher and Level Three Administrator.
She owns and operates Early Childhood Employment Agency which places temporary, temp to hire, or permanent Early Childhood Professionals in early childhood programs within Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas. Yolanda is a proud mother of 2 children at Invest Collegiate Transform. She enjoys traveling, spending time with her family, community service and attending weekly bible study.

Dr. Mildred Huey
“Helping educators to successfully retool” is not just the brand communicated by her firm, Mildred Huey Educational Consultants, but it is also her personal mission as states continue to develop career and college oriented students. Whether helping schools and districts to remove systemic barriers to student achievement through accountability reviews; or to validate institutional quality through SACS CASI and AdvancED accreditation; or to provide technical assistance for resolving identified district and school operational issues and challenges; Dr. Huey has used her 39 years of experience and expertise to also build trust, establish rapport, make connections and encourage continuous improvement sometimes in the most diverse, stressful and challenging situations.
As a change agent, Dr. Huey has worked conscientiously with schools and districts in and out of the state, and out of the country to create a sense of urgency and accountability in the areas of strategic planning, response to intervention, human resources, instructional operations, curriculum development, personnel evaluations, assessment practices, Federal Programs, accountability structures, parent involvement and resource management.
Dr. Huey earned her Doctor of Education Degree in Education Administration from NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She resides in York, South Carolina and serves on a number of boards including the Male Leadership Academy of Charlotte Governance Board and Huey Educational Consultants.

Dr. Erika Richardson
Dr. Erika D.S. Richardson is a Charlotte native. She most recently served as the Director of Faculty Development in the Center for Faculty Excellence at Atrium Health. Prior to joining Atrium, Dr. Richardson was the Instructional Designer-Faculty Development Trainer for Enrollment and Student Services at Central Piedmont Community College.
Dr. Richardson has over fifteen years of extensive experience in development and assessment of learning outcomes, curriculum integration, educational planning, adult learning and learning theories. Dr. Richardson earned her Doctoral degree in Education, Curriculum and Teaching from Northeastern University. She received her Master’s degree in Instructional Technology and Education from Troy University and her Bachelor’s degree in English from NC State University.
In her spare time Dr. Richardson enjoys reading, shopping and spending time with her husband Bruce and two daughters Emery and Bryce.

Pete and Beacon Partners' founder, Ed Weisiger, Jr. became partners in the fall of 1989. Since that time, Pete has served as President/CEO and Managing Partner. Beacon Partners is a private commercial real estate firm based in Charlotte, NC, with a focus on office and industrial properties. Beacon owns leases and manages an industrial portfolio of approximately 7 million square feet spread throughout the Carolinas and an office portfolio of almost 1 million square feet, located primarily in the Charlotte area. The firm includes 30 professionals.
Pete is a past president of the Charlotte Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) and also served as a national board member for NAIOP. He is an active community volunteer, having served in leadership roles with many non-profit organizations. He is now serving as the Vice Chair for the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, having just completed a two year term as Board Chair. He also recently completed a term on the Elder Board of his church. Pete holds an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia and a BS in engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Jim Merrifield
Jim Merrifield has directed the commercial development of 4,000 acres of land and 3.5 million square feet of buildings during his career. In addition to Crown Point, NorthCross, and Whitehall, Jim’s projects include Charlotte International Trade Center, Mooresville Gateway, Poplar Point Business Park, University East Business Park, and Waterford Center.
With over 30 years of real estate experience, Jim has overall responsibility for MPV Properties. He is involved in financial planning, securing debt and equity, personnel management, project design and construction, site acquisition, development and zoning, leasing and site sales.
After he served with Spaulding & Slye from 1980 to 1985 in Boston, Oklahoma City and Charlotte, he joined Crosland in 1985 and purchased a majority interest in its Commercial Division in 1997. In 2004 he purchased the remaining interests in Crosland Commercial and changed the organization’s name to Merrifield Partners. Jim received a B.A. in mathematics and economics from Colgate University in 1975 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1980.
